Business Context

Performance Max is highly automated. The goal of this workflow is not to fight automation, but to understand where the campaign is actually delivering and introduce deliberate boundaries where they matter.

The Challenge

Opaque Automation & Wasted Spend

Performance Max can make it difficult to understand where campaign budget is being spent. Without boundaries, automation can prioritize easy but low-value inventory. I wanted a repeatable way to inspect the campaign and introduce control where necessary.

Business Impact

Relying on too many conversion goals dilutes optimization signals, leading the system toward technically 'cheap' but commercially low-value actions.

My Approach

Making the Reasoning Visible

01

Conversion Goal Focus

The Action:

I narrowed the campaign down to 1–2 meaningful conversion goals that represent real business value.

The Thinking:

In many PMax setups, I prefer to keep the campaign focused on one or two meaningful conversion goals rather than giving the system a long list of mixed-value actions. Machine learning needs clear, high-value signals.

02

Audience Signal Enhancement

The Action:

I created custom segments based on competitor websites and relevant search terms / queries.

The Thinking:

These are provided as signals/inputs to help the automated system understand which audiences represent high-value commercial intent. Using search terms provides stronger context for what the customer considers valuable demand.

03

Inspect Delivery & Boundaries

The Action:

I applied placement exclusions and account-level negative keywords based on placement reports.

The Thinking:

Maximum useful automation requires deliberate boundaries. Automation finds opportunities; human judgment provides the fence.

Key Strategic Insight

"The campaign must have a clear technical understanding of what a valuable conversion actually means to the business."

Outcome

Sustainable Results

Through strategic alignment and diagnostic precision, the following qualitative outcomes were achieved:

Wasted spend dropped significantly as the system stopped chasing low-value inventory.
Within approximately four weeks, ROAS increased by around 150%.
Increased transparency allowed the client to understand exactly where their budget was contributing.
